USP16 is a member of the USP subfamily of DUBs. DUBs are categorized into 5 subfamilies: USP, UCH, OTU, MJD, and JAMM. USP16 can deubiquitinate H2A, one of two major ubiquitinated proteins of chromatin, thereby acting as a coactivator.
