SUMO2 is a member of the small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) family. There are four confirmed SUMO isoforms in humans: SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3 and SUMO4. SUMOylation is a post-translational modification involved in various cellular processes, such as nuclear-cytosolic transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, protein stability, response to stress, and progression through the cell cycle. Polymeric SUMO2 chains are susceptible to polyubiquitination which functions as a signal for proteasomal degradation of modified proteins.
